Sony HT-6600DP Home Theater in a Box ASIN:B0000AC89R Our Price: $474.99
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A great system Comments: I've owned this system for almost a year and find it is extremely versitile and does most everything I want. The only drawback is that it has no turntable inputs. That's right, I ahve an old AR turntable that I want to connect. Oh well.
| Samsung HT-SK5 Progressive Scan DVD Home Theater System with Klipsch Speakers ASIN:B0000E2RZM Our Price: $299.94
Customer's Rating: 1 Summary: don't waste your money on a Samsung HT-SK5 Comments: The HT-SK5 is a lemon--don't buy it. Although the sound quality is great, the audio doesn't match the video when you're using a digital input, like digital HDTV. So, the lips don't match the words on any digital stations. It made it impossible to watch any HDTV programming, which essentially was why I bought it.
After 3 months of dealing with Samsung's poor technical support, including shipping the product back to Samsung, I learned from Samsung that they can't fix the problem, and they don't have a replacement product that would work better. The only thing more frustrating than the audio sync problem was Samsung's awful technical support. The staff was poorly educated about their own products, they never returned calls or e-mail like they promised, and seemed to have no concern for their customers. Don't waste your money--in fact, Samsung treated me so poorly, I can't recommend buying any Samsung products.
| Sony DAV-FC7 Dream Home Theater System with 5-Disc DVD Player ASIN:B0000B0GMZ Our Price: $499.87
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Excellent value, easy set up, however.......... Comments: Set up was a breeze; the speaker cables are color coded and it took almost no time to get the system set up to hear a DVD. But, if one has poor eyesight or large fingers, the very small remote will irritate you. I have two SONY electronic items, and both have a larger remote than for this SONY. Setting up the speakers is rather straightforward, although the distances one can select are fixed multiples. One can, however, increase or decrease the decibels to compensate for each speaker. However, in setting up the speakers, the system hits a tone on each speaker in sequence, and if there is a way to stop the sequence, I have not found it.
I have a SONY TV (Wega XBR) and could not figure out how to get the TV sound through the new speakers. A teenage boy (neighbor) gave me the clue as how to do so, and changing settings in the TV menu and the correct hook up solved that easily. Since I have the TV sound through the new speakers, if one is viewing a DVD and then switches to the TV mode (from DVD mode to Tuner mode on the system), it is the same as stopping the DVD so beware (it is not a pause, it is a stop!)
The bottom line is that I am very pleased with the sound and the system is very compact. Having an AM/FM radio also built in will allow for diversity in listening to the system. SONY is offering a lot of value for the money. A slightly larger remote would have allowed me to give this five stars.
| Roku HD1000 High-Definition Digital Media Player ASIN:B0000DH8HH Our Price: $299.99
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Very good product, although a bit too expensive Comments: This is a very well executed product.
After using the Prismiq MediaPlayer for six months (which I have now sold off on ebay), this is a godsend. Even my wife can now use the Roku HD1000.
* Component Video Output of upto 1080i (this is a plus for me as I have an HDTV, although this may not be an important feature to you if you do not have HDTV) -- finally some justice done to my digital photos. Actually, the UI is more readable as well because of the higher resolution.
* Very good UI, although some some features (better playlist navigation, auto-playlists or sort by artist/album/genre etc) are desperately needed.
* Open platform, SDK is freely available. Opens door for 3rd-party developers
* No special server software needed, other than SMB file sharing.
* The company engineers (including the CEO) seems to be listening to the customers and coming up with useful feature updates.
* The only negative feature is its price. At $500, it seems a bit too expensive.
| Sony DAV-FC8 DVD Dream System ASIN:B0000CE6R1 Our Price: $599.88
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Good Product Shame about the surround sound Comments: ordered on amazon.com, for way less than anywhere else i could find it. Same price at local "Best Buy" as the model below, the FC7.
for me, im not an expert, the sound is great, i had a bose system before this and it sounds way better that that.
Installed easily but 3 minor grumbles. 1. The surround sounds cables are not long enough had to go buy some more. 2. Doesnt come with Wall mounts for the Surround sound, Why ?! Seems like most people have surround speakers in the ceiling or on the wall. 3. Cant connect my Dish Receiver video out through the same video out as the DVD, So i have to switch both the TV and the Receiver. No idea why, just wil live with it.
Anyway i like sony products am now looking for a plasma screen to go with it! Happy listening

| Onkyo Dolby® Digital EX/DTS®-ES 6.1-Channel Home Theater System (HTS760) ASIN:B00009NR0R Our Price: $499.87
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great Home Theater System Comments: This is my first full home theater system and I've been very happy with it. The price isn't too outrageous for a system of this quality.
There are plenty of A/V inputs on the receiver, including 2 component video inputs for high definition sources (Digital Cable, DVD, X-Box, etc.) and three digital inputs (2 optical, one coaxial). Also, all of the video inputs have s-video connections which is a plus. Of course you can rarely have too many connections and I've already had to settle with what was given. My one complaint concerning connections is the lack of a digital output which is desirable for recording with CDs, DVDs, and minidisc.
I've been very pleased with the output of the speakers included. I'm not exactly and audiophile but I can tell low quality from high and these are high quality speakers for a system at this price. I agree with some of the other reviewers that the speaker cables could be a higher quality and a bit longer though. Also the rear speakers are bigger than many other home theater systems but you'll have to decide if that's a problem based on the size of your room
The receiver's abilities are superb. Dolby Digital and DTS support plus DSP modes for stereo sources is great. Movies sound awesome and music is great as well.
Finally, setup is easy thanks to color coded cables. The remote control works great even with other components (TVs, VCRs, DVD, etc.).

Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Excellent Receiver Comments: I run the Onkyo with: Samsung DVD-HD931 DVD player Samsung HPN4239 Plasma AudioSource Amp1 Amplifier Sony CD changer
The Amplifier was necessary to drive my passive subwoofer. Buy an active woofer if you don't own an amp.
The NetTune system works great. You need a Windows PC on your network to use this feature. Sound quality is great.
Video quality through witched components also very good.
| JVC TH-A30 Progressive-Scan DVD Home Theater System ASIN:B00006K0WV Our Price: $319.88
Customer's Rating: 3 Summary: Fan failed Comments: Liked the sound and picture quality until the cooling fan failed after about a year. Now DVDs and some CDs freeze up after it gets too hot unless I keep a portable fan blowing on it during operation. Purchased it at Media Play which has since gone out of business. Having a []time finding a replacement fan. Also wish I would have invested a little more and purchased one with a multiple CD changer.

| Sharp SD-AT1000 Home Theater System ASIN:B000093UR4 Our Price: $299.99
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: one of the best out there Comments: the sharp sd-at1000 is by far one of the best home theater out there for its price(i got mine for 199). it has 600 watts or total power and can decode everything, dts, dolby digital, pro logic and pro logic 2. its also utilizes sharp's 1 bit technology which converts analog signals into digital, while its ultra-high speed sampling rate captures detailed, high frequency sounds that could never before be experienced. it also has 2 digital and 3 line inputs and a nice design. this system also doubbles as a am/fm radio with magnetically shielded front speakers. my only complaint is it does not have a dvd play but for the price i really wasn't expecting one. later models such as the sd-at 3000 and 4000 dv do contain dvd players but for a much higher price. i'd recommend this system to anyone, just buy a good dvd player and you're good to go.
| Yamaha HTR-5650 6-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver ASIN:B0000ALX5Y Our Price: $399.99
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Jmaybrick Comments: I truly love this receiver. One of the things that initially attracted me to it was the 480 watts of power. I couldn't wait to take it home and see how my CD's and DVD's sounded on it. What amazed me was not only the really great bass responce, but the clearity. I watched my Phil Collins DVD and it was like I was actually there in front of the stage. For the first time I really feel like I now know how the artists truly sound. I can honestly say, I know I got my money's worth with this receiver! Thank you Yamaha! Jess

| Panasonic SA-HE100 Home Theater Receiver (Black) ASIN:B000067DK0 Our Price: $228.94
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Pretty good unit Comments: I just wanted to quickly say that I had the same problem with the on/off button on the remote. After unplugging the unit and plugging it back in, I went through each remote setting and hit the power button...nothing happened with TV, VCR, DVD, and Audio....however, when I hit the "Tuner/Band" setting, the on/off function began to work from the remote. I don't know why it does that, but at least it now works (I did this a few times to verify that it was the Tuner/Band button that seemed to fix things).....so, hopefully the other reviewer with the problem will read this and maybe fix their remote. In regard to the receiver, the sound is great...like others stated, it would be nice if it had more SFC settings ("stadium" sound setting for example)....also, you cannot switch from digital to analog using the remote....besides that, it's great for the price and is able to go as loud as I have needed....I actually bought this one because my old one would always have an overload...no more overloads with the SA-HE100 so far. After buying this, I upgraded my speaker system and I am a very happy man. Now I need to save for that new 51" TV....LOL.

| Onkyo SKS-HT510 Surround Speaker System ASIN:B0000A1WHT Our Price: $279.00
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Great sound at an affordable price Comments: This 6.1 speaker system sounds terrific with our Yamaha RXV630 receiver. They perform very well for normal TV viewing and music, but really shine when watching a DVD with true surround sound.
They were easy to set up. The set includes color-coded wires which correspond to individual speakers; you do have to provide the appropriate connectors on the wires to make them compatible with your receiver.
The speakers are bigger than some other surround sound systems, but they are solidly built with quality wood cases. The three small rear speakers have built-in mounting brackets.

KLH SBHT 6S 6-Piece 550-Watt Micro Home Theater System ASIN:B00006ANX3 Our Price: $149.99
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Super Steal! Comments: I was researching these speakers (and comparable ones) for a while due to the price. I was about ready to buy them when, the day I was planning to, the price dropped [...] I went to [...] to pick them up, brought them home, and started plugging away. I wasn't expecting much but they sound very good and are a steal [...]. The quality of the sound is excellent, they are not Bose, but what do you expect.
One issue is the size of the inputs for the speaker wire. They do include wire for all speakers and the sub woofer (which was a nice surprise), but I doubt you can fit heavy gauged wires into them (like Monster Cables). I assume the quality of the sound can be even better than with the crap wires that are included. They have a lot of power for such small speakers, and the ability for you to rotate the 'face' can come in handy. Overall super steal!
| Zenith XBS245 DVD-VCR Home Theater System (Silver) ASIN:B0000A2UAS Our Price: $299.99
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: great little system Comments: I bought this system a few months ago to go in our bedroom and have been very happy with it. Our surround sound system in the living required us to get a specialized universal remote in order to work everything. This system has everything you need, with just one remote. It doesn't sound as good as our Bose speakers, but this is definately a good package for the money. The only gripes I have are with the remote. You can't program your TV's power button into this remote, so you end up needing to keep your TV's remote control around. Also, this does not have a previous channel or swap button enabling you to switch between two different channels.
| Sony HTC-800DP Home Theater System ASIN:B0000988XI Our Price: $349.87
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Solid sound, great price Comments: I hooked this system up to my TV last night and for the price, it delivers. Looks good, too! Sound is excellent, simple controls, easy to set up, clean design. The remote is a little unwieldy with too many buttons of the same size and shape. Maybe I'll get a universal. Watched MI-2 and this system rocks!

| Bose Lifestyle 3-2-1 Home Entertainment System with DVD Player ASIN:B00005T3JX Our Price: $999.00
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Uncomparable Sound Quality Comments: To buy this 3-2-1 system at such a price, you .... have been waiting to buy a Bose all your life know that Bose is the best in Sound Technology like simplicity and want the minimum features on your remote like the minimum of pieces in your home theater with the topmost sound quality do not want to be bothered with joining 20 wires at 40 places
....if you are like that ...just like me..then go for it. I first bought a sony dreamsystem a day earlier came home, got first of all depressed on seeing the 7/8/9 pieces and scratched my head on how was i gonna arrange so many pieces in my not so big living room, then the wires to be attached and so on plus the system didnot play mp3s and cd-rs. Not a Bose...just a 4 piece set and dare i say much better in sound quality than the sony or any other equivalent. The system offers surrond sound from 2 speakers (where others need 3 to 4) , a subwoofer, and the main sleek system. The features on the remote are minimum and that's another thing i liked. I don't need the massive programming stuff on the remote which i won't use ever. Its so simple that the remote doesn't have even a open/close function for the dvd - which is very logical considering you will used that feature only if you are going to place in or remove your dvd from the player, so its built on the system itself instead of the remote. Surround sound is perfect and is much much better than any other system. If you looking for sounds which should come from your back side or wherever then this system is not for you. The speaker very efficiently cover the right, left and center sound effects - so much that at many times while playing a dvd we were looking towards our left and right thinking someone or something had actually made a noise there. And unlike the Sony dreamcase where you had wires to push in the speaker holes (very amatuerish) whereas here in Bose you have actual plug ins in the speakers !! For the previous reviews which didn't like this system i would say it was unfortunate they must have picked up a wrong piece which may have defects. Taking a star off for the price - but honestly that's the first time I saw Bose offering something at this level. You can get similar systems at half the price maybe, but Bose is Bose, sound quality couldn't get any better than this...
| Apex HT150 150-Watt Progressive-Scan DVD Home Theatre System ASIN:B00008N6XB Our Price: $119.99
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Great sound for a low price. Comments: I also have known of Apex's good reputation. That's why when I discovered this home theater system, I couldn't pass it up. It's well worth what you pay. The sound quality is excellent. Although 150 watts may not seem like much, it is more than enough to make the walls in my living room rattle when turned up halfway. I was also impressed with the quality of the DVD player. The AFF feature is a nice touch but stretches some movies out of proportion, which may not bother some people, but it sure did bug me. Luckily you can turn it on or off with one-button.
Unfortunately, I have to agree with the previous reviewers who said there is no 5.1 support for input devices. I was disheartened when I tried plugging in my XBox only to find sound output was analog and only came from 3 of the 5 speakers. For the price, though, I can't complain too much. The Apex HT-150 is a terrific budget home theater system that perfectly complements a small living room or dorm room.
| Kenwood Home Theater System - HTB-206-B ASIN:B0000EI2NN Our Price: $299.99

| Sony DVD/VHS Home Theater System (HT-V1000DP) ASIN:B0000CBCO6 Our Price: $499.87
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Marvelous Comments: This system is the greatest investment I could have bought. Easy setup took a little more than one hour, got everything up and running that night. One flaw in Sony's design is some of the cords are to short. They don't reach down to the floor. There are many plugs and not enough outlets, I think they should all be able to plug into the reciever to take up only one outlet
| SONY STR-DE695 A/V Receiver for Home Theater Audio System ASIN:B00009YW3G Our Price: $239.99
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: great functionality for the price! Comments: Recently my 1992 vintage Sony STR-D595 receiver went on the blink. So I was ready to replace it with something as close to the state-of-the-art as possible (without breaking the bank).
The STR-DE695 definitely delivers with 6.1 channel and HD-Pass component video capabilities. I have only two real complaints with this receiver. The AM radio section lacks any real sensitivity. Only the strongest stations will come thru and that is assuming you have a decent antenna attached. (Unfortunately, this is a common compaint with many lower end receivers.) If you live in a rural area and rely on good AM reception, this receiver is not for you.
The other is the user manual. Though I read it cover-to-cover prior to using the receiver, there are many areas it fails to cover. The Universal multi-function remote is not explained very well though it does work well once you get used to it. I have several components from different brands and this remote can handle most of them all pretty well. (If your stereo components are more than 10 years old, you may find the supplied remote to not be all that effective.)
All in all though: great sound, great capabilities, for a great price! (I bought mine for $239 plus tax.)

| Bose Lifestyle 28 Home Entertainment System (White) ASIN:B00006AL0H Our Price: $2,499.99
Customer's Rating: 2 Summary: Paying for a name. Comments: I bought a Bose Lifestyle 35 system in Denver, CO, at the Cherry Creek Mall Bose Outlet. Prior to purchase, I was brought into a sound studio in the store to listen to "the system". It sounded pretty impressive. I brought the unit home, hooked it up and listened. Honestly, I had a hard time telling whether the Bose system or my television speakers were on. Very disappointed. I turned up the volume a bit (about 75% of max) and the center cube speaker blew. Very disappointed. I did some research and learned a lot. Bose does not publish a lot of the specs one would expect to be published on any audio system, let alone such an expensive one. People in the field think poorly of Bose quality and value, period. I called Bose Headquarters, the store in Denver, and a local dealer inquiring about returning the unit. I was told I must drive the unit back to Denver (250 miles from my home, over the mountains, in the snow) to return it, which I did. When I did, the store manager informed me that there is a mail-in return policy and I didn't need to waste an entire day, let alone drive so far in such conditions. He asked if there was anything else I was unhappy about (besides the salesgirl not informing me that I was to receive a free Wave Radio with the purchase; by the way, I liked the Wave Radio a lot but it is also overpriced), and I asked him if the system in the demo studio in the store is the same system I purchased. I mean, after all, they shine pretty spotlights on it and completely lead you to believe that's what you're listening to. "I don't believe anyone said that to you, did they?" was my response. Unbelievable. It turns out that what you hear in the studio is a specially recorded track (made by the designers of the system to accentuate the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of the system) played on an $8000 digital tape player! I subsequently purchased a $500 Onkyo 6.1 channel (not 5.1, like the Bose) system from Circuit City and am completely thrilled. It sounds FAR better than the Bose, for 1/7 the price. Goodbye, Bose, forever.

KLH Plat-6 6-Piece Home Theater System with 100-Watt Subwoofer ASIN:B00006ANWZ Our Price: $359.99
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: The real KLH Plat 6 Review Comments: All in all very nice. I would have liked to have seen binding posts on the speakers rather than clips but no matter. A very good system for the amount of money spent. My setup is a Panasonic CP72 DVD player and Sony STRDE885 amplifier and now Plat 6 system. First off let me say that the 80Hz-20kHz is kind of optimistic. Both the center and sats are probably at -3 at 80Hz. I can buy 20kHz though. After listening to Queensryche's Empire DVD-A in high-rez 5.1, I could hear some really detailed symbol work and subtle nuances, very nice! The sub is DEFINITELY capable of producing frequencies in the 40Hz range. My guess is 40Hz at 0, 35Hz at -3. It can get quite loud as well. The room my system is in is about 20'x15' and getting 108db isn't difficult. I set the sub for 80Hz and this seems to work well. Anyway like I said for music it is suprisingly good. Fantastic center channel! For movies it is equally as good (which is a first for me to have both with one system for this kind of money). Titanic, Terminator, Lord-of-the-Rings etc, absolutely wonderful bass and good clarity, especially in the vocal range. These are a bit taller than your standard "shelf" system due to the additional woofer in each sat but there is no fee lunch after all. The center channel is also fairly wide for the same reason. 4 woofers and a central tweeter. The curvature of the sats require that they sit a bit lower so that the tweeter is head level to gain the optimal amount of treble. If the bottom woofer sits at head level it could sound a bit tinny. They are aesthetically pleasing with the covers off or on. Great bang for the buck!
So what are the cons? The annoying very bright blue LED on the front of the sub could be a con or pro depending on the person. Clips rather than binding posts, a slightly optimistic frequency range on the center/sats, so-so wiring that comes with it...thats it! I enthusiastically recommend this product!

| Zenith XBS344 Progressive Scan DVD-VCR Home Theater System (Silver) ASIN:B0000A2UAT Our Price: $249.99
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: My First Home Theater System Comments: I just recently started thinking about getting a DVD/VCR and a home theater system. Of course I turned to Amazon.com first. My favorite place to shop online. I found just what I was looking for in the price range I wanted to spend. I have had the system for one week now and am very pleased. I am in the 'over 50 club' and just wanted quality sound when listening to CD's, DVD's and Video's. This fits the bill. I have seen various comments about setup time and setup being a challange. I'm new to all of this but it was not difficult at all. I especially like how you can adjust each speaker for db's and for distance. It is also very clear how you are to best arrange them physically for the best sound. It takes a while to get used to the remotes if you are not real familiar with their use, but by the end of the second day of use - I had it down pretty well. In the price range I doubt you could find a better deal.
| Sony HT-DDW750 Home Theater System ASIN:B000092TT3 Our Price: $249.94
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: Great product, but could be better Comments: Most of these reviews sound like they were written by people who work in the advertising department at Sony. I don't so I'll give you the real deal.
The sound is pretty good, what I would expect from mini speakers. The subwoofer adds that extra boom to make the sound more rich. The surround sound is great when watching DVDs. It's almost like being in the theater. I would like more sound out of the rear speakers when listening to music though, almost nothing comes through.
There are a couple things that I think could be better. First of all it's not as easy to use as a toaster, but I was able to figure most things out after reading the manual. The digital optical cable hooks up to Video-2, not DVD, so when I watch a DVD I have to select Video-2 instead of DVD. Whose stupid idea was that? The "universal" remote is the most complicated thing I've ever seen. I'm a technical person, but I can not figure out how to enter the codes to control my other equipment. It seems like I got the wrong instructions or something because it doesn't make sense. Don't even bother trying to route your video signal through the reciever unless you don't care about using s-video or component video. All it has is the normal video out. And finally, when you turn it on it takes a few seconds before the sound starts playing. Maybe it has to boot up Windows or something...
I don't mean to sound like I hate this reciever, I did give it four stars after all. But those are just some of the things that annoy me. Overall it's a great product for the price. I just need to go buy a new universal remote before this one drives me crazy.
| Onkyo TX-SR501 Home Theater Receiver ASIN:B00009L3NV Our Price: $299.00
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: A great receiver at a great price! Comments: I am totally satisfied with this receiver so far...The step up from just having Pro-Logic to this 6.1 system is considerable. It makes everything sound better... music, movies, and games. Contrary to the report I saw here, this receiver has (2)optical inputs with (1)coaxial input.(not the other way around)These are both assignable to the input that you want. The setup wasnt bad. Actually, if you follow the manual, it is quite easy. Dont be fooled by the seemingly low power rating compared to others. Onkyo measures their ratings in a different way than most. This receiver has plenty of power to rock the house. If you want a truly high quality receiver without breaking the bank, try one of these!
| JVC TH-M45 Executive Home Theater System (Silver) ASIN:B000093USU Our Price: $399.99
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great Sound Comments: We bought this home theater system for Christmas and have been nothing but impressed. The sound quality is absolutly wonderful. I highly recommend it if you like things loud. Plus I didn't think that we would use the 5 disk DVD player, but now I find it useful and glad that we went with the 5 disk DVD player.
| Panasonic SC-HT700 5-Disc Progressive-Scan DVD Home Theater System ASIN:B00008XL1I Our Price: $269.84
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great Sound, nice to look at Comments: I have had this sytem for about two weeks. It is my first home theater system and let me first say that the difference from a traditional TV set with speakers is incredible. The subwoofer is just enough for my room which is 19 x 14. The speakers, which have to be displayed around the room are nice looking and can fit on a wall without being noticed. The remote has a lot of features many of which I may never use. It took me about 5 hours to set everything up and that included running the speaker wire under some baseboards. They give you a lot of wires and verything fit nicely. I am very pleased.

| Yamaha HTR-5660 6-Channel Digital Home Theater Receiver ASIN:B00009ZY5D Our Price: $329.84
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Class act all the way! Comments: Most of what I have to say is covered in the other reviews, although I have to say that the reviewer who gave a 1 star rating just because of the remote was not doing this receiver any justice.
Setup was quite nice and simple. Now anyone who has never used a 5.1 or 6.1 receiver before might not find it that easy. But it's still quite straight forward if you read the manual. You can choose how many speakers you want to set up, anywhere from 2 to 6. Setting the volume for each speaker is also easy. The best part is that you can even change each speaker volume while listening to an audio input - makes it easier to choose a setting you really like. Regarding the remote - yes, it can be a little intimidating at first. There's a LOT of functionality in the remote. And a lot of the buttons actually have double functionality (similar to a 'SHIFT' function on calculators). But after using it for a while, you'll get used to it. I certainly wouldn't condemn this receiver just because of the remote. In fact, it looks nice and even grows on you after a while.
As for sound - this receiver is absolutely awesome! I had a Denon AVR-2800 earlier that went bad. I loved the Denon. But this Yamaha receiver is even better - didn't think it possible. Of course, to be fair, I'm using the Yamaha in 6.1 mode while the Denon was only a 5.1 receiver. The extra 6th speaker (Rear Center) really sounds nice. Also, the simulation modes that this receiver has are fantastic. For those who are not aware, a simulation mode is needed to convert a 2 channel audio source (like broadcast TV, Tuner, etc.) or a 5.1 audio source into a 6.1 output. The extra channels are 'simulated'. I myself didn't understand the importance of simulation till I used this receiver. Typical simulation effects are 'Hall', 'Rock Concert', etc. and they're all fun to play with and sound great!
The only complaint I had at first was that the bass didn't seem to sound as deep as my previous Denon receiver (everything else like speakers and DVD player remained the same). The sound was (and still is) crystal clear, but only the bass seemed lacking. So at first I had to turn up the volume on my powered subwoofer. But then I played with some settings on the receiver - like making the bass come out of both subwoofer and all speakers and it sounded much better. In fact I had to end up turning down the volume on the subwoofer. But the point is that you have a LOT of control. There's even a graphic equalizer that lets you set 5 different frequencies, a bass and treble control, a LFE (Low Freqeuncy Effect) Level adjustment, etc.
As far as choosing from the Yamaha family of receivers, here are some tips you might find useful: 1) The HTR-5660 is the same as the RXV-640, the HTR-5650 is the same as the RXV-540 and the HTR-5640 is the same as the RXV-440. Apparently Yamaha changes the product code only for purposes of channel distribution, or something like that. So shop around for whichever one gives you a better deal. In my experience, the HTR series was less expensive than the RXV series. 2) When deciding between the HTR-5660 or the HTR-5650 or the HTR-5640, be careful. The sound quality of the HTR-5640 and the HTR-5650 should be identical, and I'm sure very good. But the HTR-5660 steps up in output power and it uses a more powerful amplifier section. Apparently, this new amplifier also improves a little on sound quality. As far as requiring a powerful receiver, I thought I wouldn't really need the output power of the HTR-5660. But I find that I usually turn it up to -30db (it goes from -60db to 0). It's always good not to have to stress your amplifier. So with a HTR-5650 or HTR-5640, I'd probably have to turn the volume up even more - and I don't really listen to anything that loud. My room dimensions may have something to do with this, but still - choosing a more powerful receiver may be more important than you think. 3) Yamaha (and perhaps other manufacturers too) come out with new models around the summer. So retailers may start to try and get these HTR or RXV series off their shelves, should result in a price drop.
Hope this helps - if you ever see a good sale on this receiver, go for it. You'll be really glad you did!

Samsung HTDB120 Progressive Scan DVD Home Theater System (Silver) ASIN:B0000BV0XZ Our Price: $199.99
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Great for the Price!! Comments: The quality of this DVD player is absolutely amazing. The progressive scan technology looks great even on a normal TV! The sound quality is unmatched and along with Dolby Digital 5.1 there is two sweets that make this deal amazing. The first is Dolby Pro-Logic 2, which is great for watching TVmovies and other nice programing encoded for this format. It is also GREAT for the GameCube which uses Pro-Logic 2 for surround! The best part of this deal is the DTS support!!! DTS for under $200!!!!! When I turn this DVD player to widescreen and then use the 16:9 aspect ratio on my 32" Flat CRT TV the quality is similar to HDTV!! Make sure when you get it and you are using a 4:3 display to change the setting on the system to tell it that you are using 4:3 otherwise it will default to wide and it will look bad on your TV!! Great buy!

| Bose Lifestyle 28 Home Entertainment System (Black) ASIN:B00005U23H Our Price: $2,499.99
| Koss KS3101 Progressive Scan DVD Home Theater System ASIN:B00009WC2J Our Price: $137.99
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: System sounds great Comments: I just got this system and the sound quality really is great, especially for the price. Its one of the few systems in this price range to have digital optical input, which is necessary if you're connecting certain components for dolby digital suround like an x-box. Although there is a setting called "Prologic", I'm not sure that it actually has a prologic decoder since the manual only says that it gives out prologic sound if hooked up to a prologic receiver. I'm only giving it four rather than five stars because I've noticed that sometimes it will read no disc when there is a disc there so it has to be ejected and restarted. Otherwise, its really a nice system.
| Toshiba SD-43HT Progressive-Scan DVD Home Theater System ASIN:B0000AJ5BC Our Price: $219.94
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: First home theater system Comments: While shopping for a HT system, I found many that were cheaper than this, but had worse reviews. The Toshiba had the best reviews and for just a few dollars more. While skeptical of reviews because most reviews are from people who have had bad experiences, the Toshiba seemed to be the only one with really good reviews. Once I received the system it did not take me long to set up. Since my living room is not that big, the supplied cables were just fine. I was absolutely amazed at the sound quality. Everything from CDs, CDs with MP3s and radio stations all sound great. The first DVD I watched was Spiderman and the sound and picture were outstanding. I have not had a problem with the disc tray opening, but the unit does get warm quickly so you will want to make sure that it has plenty of ventilation. So far I am extremely pleased with the setup and operation of this product.
| KLH HTA-9706 6-Piece 100-Watt Home Theater Speaker System ASIN:B00005Q5WV Our Price: $79.84
Customer's Rating: 5 Summary: Good speakers, Great price Comments: I recently purchased these speakers because my old ones died. I was looking for a good home theater system at a low price. These exceeded my expectations.
I have noticed a few people complaining about the sub. When I first hooked mine up with the pre-amp output on my receiver via the provided coaxial cable it had almost no sound. I then used a better cable, but got the same results. So I hooked it up through the front speaker outputs and then out came the bass. I don't know if this is because of my receiver or because of the sub. All I know is it fixed the problem. So you may want to try both installation techniques to see what works best with your system.
The speakers sound very good. The sub puts out substantial bass. A 6 speaker system at a very good price makes it difficult to beat.

| KLH SS-025 Home Theater Speaker System ASIN:B00005Q5WU Our Price: $149.99
Customer's Rating: 4 Summary: rather good really Comments: Overall this system was a charm. The only thing that I was skeptical about when deceiding to buy or not, was that the centre channel has only a 4" woofer along with a 5/8" high frequency driver. I didn't know how that would sound with such a small woofer for the centre channel. But it did blend nicely in with the rest of the system, and human vocals really came out with depth and clarity during six channel movies and music. Just remember to add a subwoofer- these speakers don't get below 80Hz. I knew that KLH means quality components and sound, but I bought them anyway even at the low price they are selling for. Good buy, go for it!
